PRESS RELEASE: ARTWEEKS: AN EXCITING SHOW OF NEW TALENT THANKS TO ALEXANDRA`S MEMORIAL AWARD
4th May 10
The North Wall is delighted to be the venue of a unique exhibition of new work by both emerging artists and a retrospective of work by Alexandra Reinhardt, an artist who died in 2004 aged 43, having battled with a rare blood disorder and profound deafness all her life. The Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award was set up in 2005 in her memory, the aims being to provide artists with the opportunity not only to further their own practice, but also to fund 12-week artist-in-residence projects culminating in the creation of a piece of public art. The Award provides an opportunity to highlight and inspire artists and also provides the chance to work with people in a therapeutic way enabling them to interact in the making of an artwork. This year the Award is being held in conjunction with The Art Room at Rose Hill Primary School in Oxford. The exhibition at The North Wall will include work by artists Sean Michaels, Françoise Dupre, Malcolm Glover, Jeremy Hutchison and Alex R including works using the a range of approaches, from French knitting to glass, photography and sculpture. All have been working within hospitals running workshops and working with patients within various hospital wards around the country.
Since its launch, the Alexandra Reinhardt Award has facilitated artists’ residencies at Great Ormond Street, The John Radcliffe Hospital, The National Hospital for Neurology and the Young People’s Cancer care unit at the University Hospital in Birmingham, providing not only a creative outlet and a welcome distraction from the daily grind of patient life, but also benefits that are far more far-reaching. Malcolm Glover was based at the Gerry Bennett Ward at Mile End Hospital in London which provides care and treatment for older people experiencing both physical and mental health problems. Malcolm encouraged the patients to take photographs of each other during weekly workshops on the ward.
"It has had a very positive effect on the inpatient experience as it appears to improve mood, social interaction and motivation, " reported Occupational Therapist, Spies Wilmie, at the end of the project. Françoise Dupre’s residency took place in the Foeto-Maternal Medicine Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Her sensitive interaction with patients, visitors and staff provided an uplifting experience for everyone.
"The concept was a novel one to us," said Mr Lawrence Impey, Consultant in Obsetrics and Fetal Medicine, "but Françoise Dupré’s medium and her personality were ideally suited to a department like this. The feedback from patients was very positive: many have travelled a long way for their appointment and have great anxiety: Francoise relaxed and interested them and the final artwork that we have has vastly improved the appearance of the department."
The exhibition at The North Wall is a chance to see the resulting art work and all the wonderful achievements of Alexandra’s award. With the show being part of Oxford’s biggest visual arts festival, Artweeks, families are invited to join our creative, ’drop in’ workshops which will be held free of charge between 12 -2 on Saturdays and Sundays during the exhibition. A chance for all the family to get their hands dirty and discover their artistic flare!
