What is Circuit Breaker?

Circuit Breaker is a partnership between The North Wall, Oxford Playhouse and Pegasus Theatre as part of their commitment to and with support by the Oxford Cultural Anti-Racism Alliance (OCARA)

A brand new pilot programme, Circuit Breaker is an opportunity for an Oxford/shire-based Global Majority-led performing arts company with an existing track record to develop a project with support from three Oxford venues over 18 – 24 months, with the exact timeline to be agreed with the company.

We can offer the successful company:

  • £8000 seed funding over 2 years
  • Production week at The North Wall with technical support
  • Research & Development space at The North Wall, Oxford Playhouse and Pegasus Theatre
  • Meeting space at Oxford Playhouse
  • Hot-desking space at Pegasus Theatre
  • Networking opportunities linked to The North Wall, Pegasus, Oxford Playhouse
  • Participation in artistic planning and programming meetings of the three theatres
  • Mentorship from the Oxford Playhouse artistic team
  • Support from all three organisations in their specialist areas such as: touring, fundraising, dramaturgy, new writing, workshop development and facilitation skills, working with young people, community engagement, marketing etc

The above support-in-kind is equivalent to £9580.

The nature of the programme and the fact that it is a pilot means that the offer can be adjusted to suit the needs of the successful applicant, not all of the above need to be relevant to you. Please mention in your application the specific areas that interest you.

Who are you

A performing arts company based in Oxfordshire that is led by a person or people from the Global Majority and wants to develop a new or existing show over the next 18 – 24 months.

What do all of these words mean?

Performing Arts: work that is made to be performed live in front of an audience. You might be working in an easier or harder to define field, whether within traditional artistic frameworks or across disciplines, as long as the work that you make is performed in front of a live audience, you can apply.

Company: you can be a company or an individual who works with a group of people to make work. We will not consider applications by people who make work as solo artists.

Oxfordshire-based: You or your company is based in Oxfordshire.

Global-majority led: We use the term Global Majority here to refer to people who are Black, Asian, Brown, African, of dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south and/or people who have previously been referred to as ethnic minorities, representing over 80% of the world’s population. We are seeking applications from companies who are led by a person or people from the global majority

New or existing show: You are nor required to already know what show you might be working on during this programme, but if you already have something in mind, please mention this in your application.

18 – 24 months: We are allowing some flexibility in the timeframe to make sure that we can best support the successful company according to their needs and schedules. If you have a preferred duration in mind within that range, please mention it in your application.

Please note: This scheme is not aimed at supporting a new company. It is for a company that has already made work and the support offered would take them to the next level. This scheme is not a training scheme for artists/companies starting out.
