November 2024: Work Experience Diary

Last week, we welcomed Lottie from Woodgreen School and here’s how she found working at The North Wall:

My Experience at The North Wall

Visiting The North Wall was a truly memorable experience that left me inspired and excited for my future. I spent my time immersed in the creative atmosphere of this vibrant arts venue, reflecting on the potential of community-focused projects in the performing arts.

One idea I explored during my time there was designing a drama workshop for Year 6 students, centred on the theme of transition. Imagining the impact of my own creation was incredibly exciting. The concept focused on helping young people navigate the shift to secondary school using drama techniques to build confidence, foster connection, and express emotions. Even as a hypothetical project, it made me think deeply about how the arts can play a vital role in supporting young people during significant life changes.

What really made my experience stand out was the staff at The North Wall. They were welcoming, supportive, and full of energy, creating a space where creativity felt boundless. From discussing ideas to simply soaking in the enthusiasm they brought to the venue, their passion for fostering artistic expression was infectious.

The overall energy of The North Wall is something I won’t forget. It’s a place that feels alive with possibility—a hub where people can explore new ideas, take risks, and grow as artists and individuals. I left feeling like I had been part of something bigger, part of a community that truly values creativity and connection.

One of the highlights of my visit was getting to see Bullring Techno Makeout Jamz, a hilarious and heartfelt one-man comedy show. The performance was electrifying—both wildly entertaining and deeply relatable. The performer’s charisma and razor-sharp humour had the entire audience laughing out loud, yet beneath the comedy lay a poignant exploration of identity, relationships, and self-discovery. It was a perfect example of the kind of innovative, boundary-pushing work The North Wall is known for showcasing.

I’m so grateful for my time at The North Wall. It reminded me of the power of collaboration and imagination, and I hope to return one day to bring some of those imagined projects to life.
